Darfur Action

Darfur Action Group

The CBI Darfur/Action Group was founded in 2006 by a group of CBI members, as well as others from the Northampton and Amherst communities, who were deeply moved by a talk given at CBI by Professor Eric Reeves about the critical situation in the Sudan. Since then, we have met on a regular basis to educate both ourselves and others about the continuing and tragic events in Darfur and the need for response and assistance.

Monday mornings in NorthamptonCBI/DAG has held weekly vigils in downtown Northampton to bear witness to the dire situation in Darfur that demands the world’s attention and action. We also have initiated several public information/postcard campaigns, and, in cooperation with such groups as the Western Mass Darfur Coalition, Mass Coalition to Save Darfur, Amnesty International and Jewish World Service, we continue to lobby public officials and private companies about the need for an effective response to the ongoing tragedy, including a broad-based divestment campaign.

In addition, volunteers from CBI/DAG have held three all-community programs that have raised over $45,000 for the Sudan Aid Fund at the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts, a fund initiated and monitored by Professor Reeves. The fund directly benefits Schools for Sudan in southern Sudan and many hands-on relief projects carried on in Darfur by such groups as Save the Children, Doctors Without Borders, and the International Rescue Committee.

We are eager to welcome new members to our group, and hope you will want to join our efforts to make our voices heard locally, nationally, and internationally. Please email Henry Rosenberg at  hwr5@comcast.net  to become a part of CBI/DAG.
