This is a continuation of our fall semester class, learning the function, structure and major patterns of the biblical cantillation system. This class is intended for those who participated last semester, plus anyone who has chanted Torah in the past and is looking for a refresher course. We will continue with the same text (see below), which is clear and concise, and includes audio recordings of all the teaching examples. Our model will again be active participation in a supportive learning environment. The text will be: The Art of Torah Cantillation, Vol. 1 by Cantors Marshall Portnoy and Josée Wolff.
Bill has been a member and Torah reader at CBI since 2020. He is a part-time ESL teacher for adults, and a mostly self-taught Torah reader with 25 years experience.

Avodat Lev, meaning “heart work”, is a songful, contemplative prayer practice that follows the format of the weekday services in a mix of simple chants, meditations, and poetry in Hebrew and English. The practice is meant to guide us in greeting the afternoon/evening, acknowledging our own holiness and our connection to the holiness of Creation, expressing gratitude, and setting an intention for the month/ season ahead. Avodat Lev was developed by the Adamah program at Isabella Freedman. No prior prayer knowledge or practice is required and all are welcome. -

Wednesday evenings from 7:00-8:30 beginning November 6 and ending April 9 (skipping Dec 25, Jan 1, Feb 19). With Rabbi Jacob Fine and Rabbi Ariella Rosen in the CBI Library. In this 18-week course we will explore together many aspects of Jewish life: daily spiritual practices, the holiday cycle, Shabbat, eating practices, migration, history, and more. This class is geared toward anyone who wants to learn more about Jewish life: individuals exploring conversion, non-Jews part of Jewish families, and Jews of all stripes who want to learn more. Shiru Shabbat is a joyous, musical Kabbalat Shabbat service held at CBI and led by Molly Bajgot with Aram Rubenstein Gillis, Matt Goldfield, and other guests. Feel free to bring a picnic dinner to enjoy after services! Shiru Shabbat is inspired by the circular davvening (prayer) style of Nava Tehila, a renewal style prayer service in Jerusalem, and by Rabbi Micah Shapiro's Shabbat Nariya services in Boston, Massachusetts. The service includes contemporary melodies and the use of instruments to create a song-full, heart expanding Shabbat experience. Come to sing out, be washed in sound, and to connect with community at the end of the week. Shiru Shabbat invites you to join our new Ruach* Circle, a circle of community musicians and vocalists to elevate our song at Shiru Shabbat (*ruach means spirit). -

MarMarch 4 , 2025Purim Class: Making Sense of Chapter Nine with Rabbi Ariella

When recounting the story of Purim, we often skip over Chapter Nine of the Megillah, in which the Jewish people are granted permission to violently take revenge against those who sought their demise. We'll study the words of this chapter, and discuss and wrestle with its themes (including Jewish victimhood, power, and revenge). -
