Wednesday evenings from 7:00-8:30 beginning November 6 and ending April 9 (skipping Dec 25, Jan 1, Feb 19). With Rabbi Jacob Fine and Rabbi Ariella Rosen in the CBI Library. In Person & Virtual Options. Registration Required. In this 18-week course we will explore together many aspects of Jewish life: daily spiritual practices, the holiday cycle, Shabbat, eating practices, migration, history, and more. This class is geared toward anyone who wants to learn more about Jewish life: individuals exploring conversion, non-Jews part of Jewish families, and Jews of all stripes who want to learn more. 8 Thursdays, 6:30-8:00 pm with Bill Gertzog 11/7, 11/14, 11/21, 12/5, 12/12, 12/19, 1/9, 1/16 Register here We will learn the function and structure of the biblical cantillation system through study of the major patterns and the cantillation symbols (trope) that comprise biblical chant. Anyone with a phonetic reading knowledge of Hebrew is welcome regardless of other prior experience. We will use a clear and concise text with audio recordings of all examples. Our model will be active participation in a supportive learning environment. Students must acquire the book for this class: The Art of Torah Cantillation, Vol. 1 by Cantors Josee Wolff and Marshall Portnoy. Bill has been a member and Torah reader at CBI since 2020. He is a part-time ESL teacher for adults, and a mostly self-taught Torah reader with 25 years' experience. -

Women’s Niggunim* Sound Healing Havurah Join us for open gatherings on the third Thursday of each month at 6:30 pm on Abundance Farm. We will focus on experiencing the power of our own voices as spiritual sound healing instruments while singing sacred niggunim together as living prayers. Each woman is invited to bring a niggun to sing in our circle and will be joined by all our voices in unison. *Nigun (plural Niggunim), meaning “tune” or “melody” is a form of Jewish religious song or tune sung in groups. The Bridging the Divide Coalition invites you to join us for a discussion of the book: THE WALL BETWEEN: What Jews and Palestinians Don’t Want to Know About Each Other, featuring authors, Raja G. Khouri and Jeffrey J. Wilkinson, PhD who will share their collaboration on their ground-breaking work that seeks to bridge the divide between Jews and Palestinians, including those in the diaspora beyond Israel/Palestine. A Jew and a Palestinian, they have listened deeply to each other’s narratives in order to develop empathy for the other, an essential alternative to endless conflict. A moderated Q&A will take place following the presentation. This Zoom event will take place on Thursday, January 16th, from 7-8:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Registration is provided, using a zoom link coming soon. The Bridging the Divide Coalition, largely composed of diverse local peace and justice activists, seeks to promote dialogue that fosters understanding. The Talmud is the central text of rabbinic Judaism; you could say that the Talmud, more than the Torah, has shaped what it means to be Jewish today. The Talmud is a vast ocean. Within its 5,422 pages, it provides us with an extraordinary compendium of Jewish wisdom in the form of law, ethics, philosophy, history, and stories. During these Shabbat study sessions, we will look at a variety of the most important, fascinating, and evocative Talmudic selections. This class is intended for a wide audience, including both people who have never studied Talmud before as well as those who have. Absolutely no prior knowledge is required. -

Avodat Lev, meaning “heart work”, is a songful, contemplative prayer practice that follows the format of the weekday services in a mix of simple chants, meditations, and poetry in Hebrew and English. The practice is meant to guide us in greeting the afternoon/evening, acknowledging our own holiness and our connection to the holiness of Creation, expressing gratitude, and setting an intention for the month/ season ahead. Avodat Lev was developed by the Adamah program at Isabella Freedman. No prior prayer knowledge or practice is required and all are welcome. -

Shiru Shabbat is a joyous, musical Kabbalat Shabbat service held at CBI and led by Molly Bajgot with Aram Rubenstein Gillis, Matt Goldfield, and other guests. Feel free to bring a picnic dinner to enjoy after services! Shiru Shabbat is inspired by the circular davvening (prayer) style of Nava Tehila, a renewal style prayer service in Jerusalem, and by Rabbi Micah Shapiro's Shabbat Nariya services in Boston, Massachusetts. The service includes contemporary melodies and the use of instruments to create a song-full, heart expanding Shabbat experience. Come to sing out, be washed in sound, and to connect with community at the end of the week. Shiru Shabbat invites you to join our new Ruach* Circle, a circle of community musicians and vocalists to elevate our song at Shiru Shabbat (*ruach means spirit). -
